Fudō Myō-ō

Fudōshin refers to a state of mind that remains undisturbed by any thoughts, staying calm even in the face of danger. This mental stillness allows us to maintain complete awareness (zanshin 残心) of our surroundings, enabling quick adaptation without hesitation or surprise (banpen fugyo 万変不驚).

Fudō Myō-ō (不動明王) translates as the “Immovable Wisdom King.” He is depicted holding a sword in his right hand and a rope in his left. With his sword of wisdom, he cuts through delusion, while his rope of truth binds evil. Through his symbolism, he guides us toward achieving fudōshin.

This concept of immovability was highly regarded by bushi in feudal Japan and continues to resonate with budōka today.
